SSMR Day

Saturday, June 28, 2003

A great success! This year's SSMR Day set a record for attendance. More than 600 school children from 27 schools across Dominica made their way to Soufriere to participate in the day's events.

The morning began with a Quiz Competition where the children's knowledge of Dominica's marine environment was tested. Paix Bouche was victorious, winning a personal computer to take back to their school with them. Each year, the school that wins the Quiz Competition receives a PC donated by Petit Coulibri Guest Cottages.

The main event of the day is always boat rides in the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve. The event was based from Nature Island Dive in Soufriere. School children watched a slide show to learn about the marine creatures and the importance of sustaining the marine environment. Then they embarked on the a boat trip to tour the Soufriere Bay. The Dominica Watersports Association collaborates with Fisheries Division each year to provide the boats for these educational tours.

This year the slide show was conducted by Rowan Byrne who is studying sea turtles in Dominica, with the aim of preserving this threatened creature of the sea.

SSMR Day is an annual event sponsored by Fisheries and the Soufriere/Scotts Head Village Council.
