SHAPE Dominica

is a local non-profit NGO, registered in 1997, to help promote awareness and appreciation of Dominica's built heritage. We emphasize that traditional buildings developed a style by simply responding to local climate and available materials. Today's architecture can describe history through its elements - look closely & learn!

SHAPE reminds designers and builders of today that lessons for comfortable and sustainable construction can be found within the vernacular (traditional residential architecture) around us.

Carib Canoe Crossing Project: Ioumoulicou

A Martinican Association named Karisco aims to retrace the routes of the first settlers, in a7-year project with a number of trips. SHAPE was asked to be the local contact for Dominican Carib participation.

French Guyanese Amerindians prepared two 54-foot dug-out canoes which were paddled from Le Precheur, Martinique to Cachacrou, Scott's Head, Dominica on 2 May 2008.
