Dominica’s National flower the Bwa Kwaib Saninea carinalis, comes from a small deciduous tree endemic to the west coast. It was officially declared the national flower in October 1978. It is said that the rich color of the flowers resembles the Dominican people’s courage, strength and resilience.
Did you Know?
In 2001 a Bwa Kwaib was planted in the Roseau Botanical Gardens by HRH Princess Anne on her visit to Dominica.
Fun Facts
By losing some of it’s leaves before flowering, the Bwa Kwaib increases it’s chances of pollination and reduces it’s loss of water during the dry months!
