The new Windsor Park Sports Stadium held its official opening ceremony on Wednesday, October 24th. The EC $45 million sports facility was a gift from the people and government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The stadium’s capacity is 12,000 patrons; 8,000 in fixed seating. Other features include an electronic scoreboard, a players’ pavilion and a state-of-the-art media center.
Plans to build the new stadium were announced in March 2004 when Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit ended relations with Taiwain in favor of the People’s Republic of China. With the opening this month, this large-scale project took only three and a half years to complete.
The Opening Ceremony was a sight to behold. All of Roseau was alive with the excitement of seeing the new stadium in action. Even Creole in the Park closed early on Wednesday to accommodate this grand event. Throngs of people moved from the Botanic Gardens to the Stadium en masse, creating a sea of madras flowing through the city’s streets.
The bleachers were packed for this grand opening evening.
