The Uncivilized Journey

In 2017 Michael Lees set out to the forest with nothing more than some basic tools, religious texts and camera gear. His goal: to find a way out of the modern perils of overconsumption, technology addiction and global warming. But three months in, Category 5 Hurricane Maria – one of the most powerful hurricanes of all time – made a direct hit on Michael’s island. All of a sudden, the entire island must reckon with itself as Dominica is sent back to the Stone Age, to a life not so different to Michael’s in the forest.

“Uncivilized” delves deep into the heart of the wilderness, capturing Michael’s extraordinary journey and his reflections on the intricate relationship between humanity and nature. The film offers a profound narrative that resonates deeply, urging us to reconsider our place within the natural world.

“Uncivilized” now streaming on AppleTV, Vimeo on Demand and Amazon Prime Video

In August 2024, Director Michael Lees and “Uncivilized” were invited to the prestigious Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland via the festival’s Open Doors, Director’s Program. This was a first for Dominica, and  for a Dominican film!
